Failed Crusade: America and the Tragedy of Post-Communist RussiaBy Stephen F. Cohen Ph.D.

What really happened in Russia after the end of the Soviet Union, and how badly experts and the media misjudged it.

Failed Crusade is a deeply informed and passionate call for a fundamentally different American-Russian relationship in the post-Yeltsin era. Author Stephen Cohen shows that what US officials and other experts call "reform" has for most Russians been a catastrophic development―namely the unprecedented demodernization of a twentieth-century country―and for the United States the worst foreign policy disaster since Vietnam. What emerges is an alarming analysis of nuclear-laden Russia after 1991, representing an even greater threat to our national security than during the Cold War, and an indictment of American journalists and policy makers who failed to see or report the truth about the complicity of U.S. policy in a great human tragedy. This paperback edition has been updated to reflect the events of the last year. "Cohen writes with bracing clarity on a subject obscured by euphemisms and double talk."―Robert D. Kaplan, New York Times Book Review

From Publishers Weekly When the Soviet Union collapsed nearly a decade ago, the U.S. adopted a policy of activist support for the successor regime of Boris Yeltsin and rarely questioned that strategy. Today, Russia is burdened with an economy in shambles, an alarming national health crisis and, many fear, nuclear insecurity. Anti-Americanism is on the rise and a career secret policeman heads the Kremlin, yet Washington has still not re-assessed its Russia policy. That worries Cohen, a Russia scholar with a track record for contrarian views. The end of the Cold War, he argues, exacted a harsher penalty on the Russian people than any military loss could have, and the "aid" proffered by the U.S., in the form of technocratic blueprints for free markets, is much to blame. In a chilling analogy, Cohen notes that the traditional role of the U.S. as ally to Russia is one in which Washington "pressured a collapsing Russia to remain in the carnage." Russia survived the allied blood-lettings of two World Wars, but Cohen sees the U.S.-prescribed "shock-therapy" as fatal. The result: societal and economic devastation so severe that it warrants a new Marshall Plan and threatens U.S. national security more than the Cold War ever did. Cohen's criticism is sharp and angry. He targets policy-makers and economic advisers for their ignorance of Russian history; he lambastes scholars for their misguided prognosis of Russia's progress; and he scorns foreign journalists for a more unforgivable sinAtouting the "Washington Consensus" in spite of the growing catastrophe surrounding them. (Sept.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Cohen (Russian studies and history, New York Univ.) here presents an opinion not held by most U.S. officials and Russian "experts": that the so-called democratization of post-Soviet Russia has been a failure. The author lays out his theories in three parts: he describes how these experts crusaded for a Russia they wanted and, in doing so, managed to overlook what was really taking place in the country. Next, he includes a series of articles he has written since 1992, which further describes the actual political and economic upheaval that has been taking place there. Finally, he presents solutions to remedy Russia's woes and help bring it into the 21st century. Although Cohen is an accomplished author (Bukharin and the Bolshevik Revolution; Sovieticus: American Perceptions and Soviet Realities), his style tends to be gloating and melodramatic. However, this is a good collection that offers varying opinions of modern Russian history. For academic libraries.AJill Jaracz, Chicago Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist As a CBS News consultant, New York University professor Cohen is among the more visible Russia watchers. He is also an unapologetic critic of U.S. policy; the disastrous results of that policy are Failed Crusade's subject. In part 1, Cohen describes the arrogant missionary crusade to impose U.S. political and economic institutions on the former Soviet Union--a crusade led by American policy makers, with journalists and academics as cheerleaders--and the desperate consequences for the Russian people of their elected leaders' acceptance of this program. Part 2 gathers 10 Cohen critiques of this American crusade published between 1992 and 1998; postscripts update each article. In part 3, Cohen urges that the goal of U.S. policy should be to reduce the risk of nuclear disaster by stabilizing this giant nuclear power. This can be accomplished, he argues, only by acknowledging our crusade's failure, providing massive aid and debt relief to allow the Russian people to develop political and economic institutions that serve their needs, and truly cooperating with Russia in its efforts to define its future. There are simply too many mathematical errors in the book for me to give this book a higher rating. At $45, this is just not worth it. It seems like Doug Hull rushed this book to completion without having an editor look over the book before publishing. There is some value in the book, don't get me wrong, but come on man....it's a book about math. There's a right answer and a wrong answer. We are the students and you are the teacher Mr. Hull. Do a better job!I would recommend Owen Gaine's book "Poker Math That Matters." There are some grammatical errors in that book, but no mathematical errors that I've noticed and is an easy read. Too legit to quit...@$25 This is your A #1 source on Poker math.

Let me say that I think this is a five star book. I've been studying it for about an hour every morning and I can feel the pieces coming together in my brain. I've always read about how important it is to know the pot odds vs your outs etc etc but never really bothered to learn. The few times I looked stuff up online it never seemed particularly easy to learn, or my level of math was too far behind what it was asking me to do. This book very helpfully explains the process of working out the odds, and then gives you numerous drills to get the process stuck in your head. Worth every penny. Much better than 'Essential Poker Math' by Alton Hardin in my opinion, although there is a new expanded edition of that book out that I haven't read. I say all this with one caveat however:There seem to be a number of errors in this book and for that I've subtracted a star. I thought about subtracting two. I have the revised edition and even in the main body of the text I found an error early on. To be clear, it's a given percentage that is around the wrong way...it says A7o vs 78s is 35%-65% when obviously the Ace-high is 65% to beat 78s. That is a minor error but in any math book that purports to be teaching you math, minor errors slow you down because you keep second-guessing yourself. Perhaps that aids the learning process in the long run but some of the errors in the answer key are just plain wrong, and I've wasted a good half an hour this morning putting a tricky hand into an equity calculator to make sure I was right and the answer key wasn't. That is simply not good enough. If anyone wishes to check then page 212 bottom right: villain's open-ended straight draw plus a flush draw does not have 15 outs on the turn (as the stated answer) if hero also holds two suited cards to the same flush draw (lower cards) and the 6s gives hero a straight-flush. The correct answer is 12 outs as PT4's equity calculator points out (the standard 15 outs for an open-ended straight draw plus a flush draw minus the two spades in hero's hand and the 6s that makes hero a straight flush). This is not the only error in the answer key, and because of these errors I can only give this book 4 stars which is disappointing because I think overall it's still probably the best book on learning poker math that a beginner/high school dropout/adult who's forgotten all their college math/etc can get their hands on.

Right from the start this book gives useful techniques for learn most of the major math need to improve your game.

Good read and does a good gob of how math works at the table.

Only 2 chapters in and the reading material on how to calculate is spot on....however, it seems that that math in the problems is incorrect on more than one occasionFor example: Equity on the Turn, Hand versus Hand first problemAd Kh vs. 9c 8c board is Kc 3c 2s 10h -- book shows 9c8c favored 80%....could be that its just under the wrong cards but is very confusing.

This a great book to help anyone who is semi-skilled at poker become a lot better at the tables but total beginners should approach it with caution. I'm halfway through and so far all the examples and exercises are great and provide good off the table study experience that should vastly improve players' intuition on the table. However a lot of the answers in the back of the book are wrong. I have a BSc in pure math and have played poker semi-pro for many years and can say that, for certain, there are a lot of errors in the answer keys. There are even cases where the book tells you the wrong formula for calculating if a bet is profitable or not. For this reason I would recommend learning the right way to do the math elsewhere and then using this book as practice. If you make sure to just do the exercises and don't listen to how the book tells you to do the math this is a great read.

Doug continues to produce poker material for the rest of us ( those who don't play poker on TV) in a practical systematic manner. The book is well thought out & planned and will drill each concept into even a middle aged mind like mine. Yes there are a few mistakes but I have read he is working on corrections and will update soon. It should be said these mistakes do nothing to take away or detract from the mathematical concepts that are presented in a logical well thought out manner. It teaches you the concepts then drills them so you can immediately apply them without much mental acuity in a timely manner when it counts, when the money is on the line.

Really, really love this book. It's exactly what I needed to refine my game. Not thrilled with the kindle version though. Seems to be missing the page #s for the answer key - making it difficult to check your work.
