About the Author
Michael P. O'Donnell, Ph.D., M.B.A., M.P.H. is founder, editor-in-chief and president of the American Journal of Health Promotion, Inc., the first scientific journal to address the health promotion field. As editor-in-chief, Dr. O'Donnell has completed composite editorial reviews of over 1,400 manuscripts. As President, he has organized 10 national conferences. Dr. O'Donnell is also founder and president of the Health Promotion Research Foundation, and research director of the Health Enhancement Research Organization (HERO). Prior to starting the journal, Dr. O'Donnell worked in hospital management for seven years, and in management consulting for four years. He has served ont he faculty of five universities and is currenlty an adjunct professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan.

For such an importance force, there's surprisingly little cultural understanding of how the internet came to be, and of the kind of thinking and philosophy that underpinned it. It turns out that the story is quite remarkable. The Dream Machine is a meticulously-researched investigation that captures both the institutional dynamics and personal aspirations that led to personal computers and the internet. Waldrop digs deep (acoustics, cybernetics, information theory, Radar), and the result is a work that properly situates Licklider's work in its relevant context. I unreservedly recommend it to anyone who cares about the technology industry.

I've waded through a lot of these books, Dealers in Lightning, The Soul of a new Machine; this one required a lot of wading. Thoroughly engaging with lots of interesting characters, there's a lot of history here.4 stars, but approach with the understanding that's it's a complicated book about a complicated topic.

Though the hardcover version has some problems, such as very rare typos and a rather small font size, the book itself is fantastic, and I am very grateful to Stripe press for putting out a new edition. It is fascinating to read about the inception of technologies we are taking for granted nowadays, and what was required to make them happen. “The Dream Machine” gave me a charge of optimism and hope by showing what people could achieve. Though at the same time it is a sad book, for reading it made me see how slow the real progress in IT was since the 70s. Essential read for anyone interested in modern technologies or wishing to create something world-changing.

The book has a great cover and is a well-made hard bound edition you will cherish.The book clearly made an imprint on the founders of Stripe and it will make an imprint on you. It adds context to the work of Claude Shannon, Alan Turing, the exiled intellectuals of WWII, and the major milestones of the Nuclear Bomb, the Internet, and computer Science.A fascinating read by a forgotten author who is a cross between Walter Isaacson and Ron Chernow.

I joined the ARPANET community in the late ‘70s. This book explains a lot of weird relationships I observed. It fills an important gap left open by other histories I’d read.

Strongly reccommend this book if you work in or around the technology industry. Programmer, designer, marketer— it doesn’t matter— you will benefit greatly from understanding the history of personal computing and the internet.

The font size is way too small. The attached image shows the font size of this book on the left versus a normal font size in a 2018 non fiction book on the right. Made the book near illegible for me, so cannot comment on the contents. Shiny cover, though!

It is with great pleasure that I see that this superb book has been put on Kindle now that used print copies are nearly gone. In 2013 I based a course titled "The Rise of Modern Computing and the Internet" on it after discovering and buying a 12-year-old copy of this book on Amazon. I was blown away by its wonderful writing, comprehensiveness, and accuracy. Nothing important escapes Waldrop's attention.I lived much of this computer history during my career, especially from 1970 to 1975 while I was at System Development Corporation working under its ARPA contract. My worm's-eye view lines up perfectly with Waldrop's version of the bigger picture. (I even met Licklider once when I happened to be with some senior SDC people. He was a gentle and friendly man.)What is great about this book is that it gives you a ringside view of just about everything that was going on, and shows how individual personalities affected the course of technological history. You'll also meet some dunderheads, but thanks to Licklider, many of the right people were in the right places at the right time. You'll see them in action in this book.I offer my thanks to whomever was able to get this book released on Kindle so that the new readers it richly deserves can enjoy the story and learn the history.
